It is said that before one can learn to run, they must crawl. The UNIX OS doesn't usually provide any specific reason for us to use it, but the UNIX OS does provides a common environment for many widely used applications, like web servers and data-base management systems. Even though the class is online, this is a hands-on course. You'll get familiar with tools like telnet and ftp as well as with UNIX. You do NOT need to have Linux or UNIX at home or work, but if you've been looking for something to do with that otherwise obsolete door anchor in the corner of the garage, feel free to justify in your own mind the value of resurrecting an old machine as a Linux workstation.
