An understanding of the rationale for network security is vital for today's system administrator. As part of the security process, you have to examines threats originating from internal and external sources, and put a number on the value of information to organizations. Network vulnerabilities and threats, as well as security strategies and policies to eliminate or minimize these security weaknesses are discussion topics.

Oh, yeah, if you think that system security is just something you can slop onto your network and never have to worry anymore, we'll be going over the history of secret communications in some detail. It's a story of a bunch of people who thought the same way you did, often right before they lost their heads.

The prescribed texts for the course are Thomas A. Wadlow, The Process of Network Security and Simon Singh, The Code Book. The curriculum balances the role of cryptography and the role network security in overcoming modern threats.
